What I'm keeping my eye open for are terms relevant to what I'm doing online - ezine advertising and ezine publishing. I'm interested in learning what specific marketing terms others online are typing - hey every little bit of knowledge helps.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the results?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nary one single word...!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yep, I think it sort of amazed me, too. And then I thought about it a bit more and realized - this was a good thing! Imagine how much room is left for building a business and marketing effectively online.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you've been online for a while and sometimes find yourself muttering, "Oh the market is just flooded, there's nothing new I can do, create, or build. Everyone's seen this and done that..." then think again!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Somewhere I heard that about 400 people discover the internet for the first time about every 20 seconds. Wow! Think about that, every 20 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, they aren't all going to come storming "over here" right away. Most go online to search for new cars, or mortgage rates, or game cheat codes or new music.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But, didn't most of us start there, too?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then one day something happened, maybe it was signing up to receive that first ezine and wham! before you knew what hit you, you're a marketing fool :)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So don't despair, but do be realistic. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will your internet empire. You win!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When exactly is enough enough? When does something cross the fine line from useful to ridiculous?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The art of communication is just that - a fine art. To grab and hold anyone's attention online for longer than 2 minutes shows you've got something going for yourself - you understand how and why people do what they do and read what they read.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While advertisers and marketers look for outstanding and affordable resources - and 9 times out of 10 choose mailing lists to receive that information - the list itself must maintain a particular level of quality to ensure it is a mailing worth reading.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The last thing in the world anyone with a mailing list wants is an unresponsive list. So, how can we go about ensuring, to the best of our ability, that that doesn't happen?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Priority number 1 should be restraint. While having a list appears to put potential customers at one's fingertips, without restraint that list begins its slow (and sometimes not so slow) slide into degradation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What can one do to avoid this erosion? Is it possible?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I believe it is...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While not everyone will read everything every time, by one's use of restraint the opt in reader will stick around because when they do read, they are receiving what they asked for - information, resources, tips, help, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They'll even read the specials.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But how can you make sure your list retains its value?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consider dividing your list into "demographics" or "subscriber interests."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now stop groaning... it's really not that bad and can be a great boost to your potential sales and a real plus in the eyes of your readers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since I am a publisher, I'll use the ezine or newsletter as an example. Subscribers join to receive one's ezine daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc. Right up front, by the very act of subscribing, that person knows what to expect. They receive it, hopefully read it, respond to it - a publisher's dream subscriber.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then, the "special" mailings begin to arrive. With restraint this is typically a solo here, a special announcement there. This is still manageable in the eyes of your list. With luck your resource continues to maintain it's value.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, push the envelope with more than the occasional extra weekly mailing or two, and the slow slide begins. No one has time to open that many mailings. Physically it is not possible, and it goes without saying that mentally no one is prepared to cope with them all... it's just common sense.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, here's the "How-To" to help yourself and your readers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make GOOD use of your autoresponders!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your first signup box or mailto link would sign the new subscriber up to ONLY your ezine or newsletter (or any customer mailing list). Then, because autoresponders are so good at this, on the Thank You page, you just add a SECOND signup box!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This second box, using a 2nd autoresponder, could say something like:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"In addition to our ezine, would you like to receive special standalone advertisements? These solos are purchased by readers just like you about new and existing programs. The solo is a great way to stay on top of what's new on the net. They do they work for you by delivering themselves right to your inbox!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"By adding yourself using Box B below, you'll also be placed on our "Breaking News Only" mailing list. This is my personal way of contacting those subscribers interested in hearing about what I've personally located online! I work hard, and these occasional emails are well worth receiving!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course use your own words :)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consider, too, telling your new subscriber to use a DIFFERENT email address for EACH opt in!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This way they are sure to find your PRIMARY publication, and can peruse the rest at their leisure from different email accounts. [Be sure to tell them that as they enter your Thank You and see your next subscribe box.]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know personally I would love this option!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, you get the idea? You've just geometrically increased the value of every mailing you do, simply by making good use of your autoresponders. Your readers will thank you as you let them pick and choose what they agree to receive :)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the ezine publisher in particular this can be a great boost to your own sales. Who wouldn't want to purchase from someone who's taken the time and effort to ensure the advertisement is going to someone who OPTED IN to receive it. (I'm not talking about the ads that appear inside a regular issue, but the special and solo type mailings.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Think about it... a little extra work (and by setting up your autoresponders in this fashion VERY little work), on your part on behalf of your readers, and you've more than doubled the effectiveness of your own mailing list.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This same idea works for any website selling anything. For example, you have a gift shop that sells stained glass and crystal figurines. One person loves stained glass but could do without your mailings about the crystal. TARGET the list! Increase the potential sale by giving the person only what they asked to receive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Too much of any one thing can, and does, turn people off. Call all past clients and tell them you would like to start ending the information and need their email address.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Whenever you are speaking to someone and see an interest in real estate be sure to tell them that you have a special email information list that allows them to get information and at the same time is unobtrusive as possible, stress great info.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Go through all of the mounds of business cards that you have including the ones from Realtors that you have met at conventions and personally email them telling them about your email lists and why thy would be interested in joining. Place ads on community related websites asking people to sign up for a special list for email information or a special report. Would you buy a car from a sales lot that had totaled automobiles on the front lot? I wouldn't and neither would you. Your website is your grocery store; your car lot. You must have an atmosphere that is pleasing to buyers. One that tells that buyer that you are not an amateur, but instead a trained, seasoned professional. Your site is a direct reflection of your product and that is why that having a well designed website can make or break your sales.&lt;br /&gt;The first thing to keep in mind when designing your website, is "surfability". Take a few minutes a look around at several web pages. What makes them appealing? Were there some that you closed out of immediately? Why? Take notes and do your research. Keep in mind that when a person visits your site they have a goal in mind. They are either seeking information or shopping for a product. Give the person what they want without having to search for it. Be sure that all the information on your site is relevant to your product. Make the buyer think that they need your product to solve their problem.&lt;br /&gt;Your main page serves a very specific purpose. It should be an avenue by which the customer can shop your site. It should be easy to view and load very quickly. This is your first impression and we all know that first impressions can either close the deal or loose the deal. Make it simple. It is best to have links that are easily viewable by the reader that will navigate them to where they want to be. Tables are often a great choice when deciding on a way to design the main page of your site. Your main page should load very quickly, chances are if it takes the page more than ten seconds to load even on a 56k modem, the customer will click away to save time, hoping to find the information or product elsewhere. To increase the loading speed of your main page you should avoid large graphics or excessive graphics. To many banners or special effects can cause a page to load slowly as well.&lt;br /&gt;To make your web site more appealing to the eyes, you should stick to mild colors. If your site is a content site where the user will be doing a lot of reading, it is best to stick to black and white. Color can be added when using tables, as a way to brighten up the page, but remember to keep the overall look of the page professional and appealing to the audience that will be visiting most often. Since screen resolutions vary among monitors, it is a good idea to set the pixels to a standard 800x600. You may also choose to set the tables in your web page to span a percentage of the page rather than a set number of inches. This will be sure to accommodate all screen sizes. You should remember that a lot of Internet users will not use the same browser as you, and therefore you should be sure that your site looks as good on other browsers as it does your own. You can do this by downloading several browsers through which to look at your page.&lt;br /&gt;Be aware of the fact that the overall look of your website is a way to make money.
